TOWN OF HARRISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Waupaca County’s deer baiting and feeding ban has been renewed for three years with the discovery of chronic wasting disease in a wild deer.
It’s the first time a wild deer from Waupaca County has tested positive for CWD.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the 2-year-old doe was killed by a hunter in the town of Harrison, in the northwestern part of the county. The location was within 10 miles of Shawano, Marathon and Portage counties, which already have baiting and feeding bans.
The DNR and Waupaca County Deer Advisory Council have also set a public meeting from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 8 at Manawa City Hall, 500 S. Bridge St.
Baiting and feeding of deer has been banned in Waupaca County since a farm-raised deer tested positive for CWD in 2014.
Chronic wasting disease is a fatal disease that affects a deer’s nervous system. It was first documented in Wisconsin in 2002. No cases of deer-to-human transmission have been documented.
