MADISON, WI (WSAU-WRN) — After last week’s cold snap, temperatures across much of Wisconsin have come back above freezing.
That means ice that was reliable last week for ice fishing may not be as sturdy this week, so those who want to ring in the new year by casting some lines should take precautions.
“You never want to go out by yourself and venture out onto any body of water or ice by yourself. You should always go with someone. Stay with the crowds early ice,” said Shawn McCarten with It’s a Keeper Bait Shop in Janesville.
Law enforcement is also encouraging anglers to stay safe and remember that ice that has melted and re-frozen generally isn’t as safe as ice that hasn’t thawed.
The DNR reminds residents that they do not monitor ice conditions, but they have provided some safety guidelines and tips on how to stay safe here.
