WISCONSIN (WTAQ) — Wisconsin students have significant mental health needs, and further investment and support is essential to addressing challenges they face daily.
Data published on Tuesday by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction shows Wisconsin students generally reported experiencing significant mental health challenges while having fewer supports at school and at home. More than half of all students surveyed self reported “significant problems with anxiety.”
Communications Director for the Wisconsin Department of Instruction, Abigail Swetz, said over half of all students surveyed self reported having problems with anxiety. When asked about suicide, 18.1% of all students reported that they seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year.
However, there is hope.
“It gives me a tiny bit of hope because it is so striking,” said Swetz. “It will catch enough attention for us to come together and acknowledge that this is truly a problem for our children.”
