SACRAMENTO, CA (WTAQ) — A record Powerball jackpot grew to an even larger $1.9 billion after no one won the multi-state lottery drawing on Saturday night, the 40th consecutive drawing without a winner.
The new $1.9 billion prize marks the largest lottery offering in world history. The cash option, a one-time payment for the winner, would be about $929.1 million.
The jackpot is paid out over about 30 years. It remains possible that Monday’s prize could hit $2 billion depending on how ticket sales go over the next two days.
The Powerball prize keeps getting more massive because of the inability of anyone to overcome the long odds of 1 in 292.2 million and win the jackpot. To take the top prize, players must match all five white balls and the Powerball.
Since someone won the prize on Aug. 3, there have been 40 drawings without a winner.
Powerball is played in 45 states and Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
