It was a humble school bus, but it carried some of the biggest names in Wisconsin – and U.S. – politics, as Democrat Governor Tony Evers stopped in Sheboygan on Wednesday.
The crowd of perhaps 150 people were given a shot of enthusiasm from a blue-ribbon list of democrats focused on getting out the vote for the blue ticket in next Tuesday’s general election.
The meeting began with a toast by Sheboygan’s own Maeve Quinn and Mary Lynn Donohue waving their cans of “Evers Ale” and “Tammy Shandy” to cheer on the crowd with a call of “Fired Up – Ready to Go!”…and finished with another rallying cry from the marquee speaker of the morning, former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder who led the crowd to chant “We Can Do This” and “Yes, We Can!”
The full list of prominent speakers also included the State Director of the IBEW Jim Meyer, Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson, State Democratic Party Chair Ben Winkler, Attorney General Josh Kaul, Lieutenant Governor Candidate Sara Rodriguez, and U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin.
During the meeting the final Marquette Law School Poll revealed a dead heat between the Governor and challenger Republican Tim Michels with 48% of the vote each, and after the meeting Governor Evers was asked why the independent voters that will likely decide the election should vote for him. He told WHBL that “I think we’re on the right side of the issues, and those things that I’ve talked about, whether it’s education, whether it’s the University of Wisconsin System, whether it’s infrastructure…broadband…those are bipartisan issues. So, that’s how we win.”
The yellow school bus, chosen by Evers as a symbol of his education background, drove off after about 90 minutes towards the next stop, while republican Michels would make his case for red votes in Sheboygan later in the afternoon.
