Head Coach Matt LaFleur brought it up Friday night after the Family Night practice and again today as the guys returned to work. The team’s conditioning, at least with a few players, may be leaving a bit too much to be desired.
The practice in front of 50,000 at Lambeau was cut short by about 15 minutes with a lot of players sucking wind and the Sunday practice was altered too. Weather also played a role as a rainy day forced the team inside the Don Hutson Center and obviously, without any fans to watch. So LaFleur changed gears to give the team a little extra rest and conducted another walk through session that lasted all of 75 minutes. There’ll be a little more physical exertion Monday through Wednesday before the team departs for their Pre-Season opener against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium Friday night.
During one on one drills on Family Night, starting safety Darnell Savage pulled up covering a route with a tug on his hamstring. He said after the practice he should be alright and LaFleur said Sunday there’s no long term concern but Savage was given the day off, along with safety Innis Gaines, likewise dealing with a hamstring pull. Randall Cobb was given a veteran’s rest day off.
Returning to practice were running back Patrick Taylor and wide receiver Malik Taylor. Malik had been battling a shoulder injury and even though it was just a walk through, he had to wear a special jersey.
Taylor said he got a lot of ribbing from teammates about the QB-non-contact red color and hopes it won’t be long before he’s back in white or green.
Linebacker Randy Ramsey was also back following a twist of the ankle and cornerback Keisean Nixon made his training camp debut. Nixon, the former Las Vegas Raider, was activated off the Non-Football Injury list after dealing with a groin injury since camp opened.
The third week of camp opened with these five starting on the offensive line. Yosh Nijman at left tackle, Jon Runyan at left guard, Josh Myers at center with Jake Hanson at right guard and Royce Newman at right tackle. The right side is where most of the shuffling is taking place with Zach Tom in the mix with Newman at tackle and Royce is still sharing reps with Hanson at guard.
Weather permitting, the boys will be back on Ray Nitschke Monday morning at 10:30.
