HUDSON, WI (WSAU) — The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect connected with a stabbing incident on the Apple River in the Town of Somerset.
Officers say Nicolae Miu of suburban Minneapolis is suspected of stabbing five people as they were tubing down the river Saturday afternoon. One of the victims died at a hospital just across the border in Minnesota, the others were transported to St. Paul and are being treated for abdominal injuries.
Miu made an initial court appearance on Monday. He is facing five counts including first-degree intentional homicide and four counts of attempted first-degree homicide. According to the complaint, Miu was bothering the group as they were tubing. When a third group told him to back off, he then became physical with them before falling into the river. That’s when witnesses say he approached the group and attacked.
The incident remains under investigation.
At the last report on Sunday, all four victims were in stable condition. The severity of their injuries ranged from serious to critical.
The 52-year-old was arrested just down river from where the incident took place. Officers add that charges against him are pending, and he will appear in court Monday afternoon.
