Cristian Javier and two Houston Astros relief pitchers combined to no-hit the New York Yankees in a 3-0 victory at Yankee Stadium on Saturday.
Javier (5-3) threw 115 pitches and struck out 13, both career highs, over seven innings. Hector Neris tossed a hitless eighth inning and closer Ryan Pressly retired the Yankees in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the no-hitter.
Rookie J.J. Matijevic and Jose Altuve hit late homers for the Astros, who handed the Yankees consecutive losses for the third time this season. Yuil Gurriel added a pinch-hit RBI single in the ninth.
Gerrit Cole (6-2), formerly of the Astros, took the loss for the Yankees. He allowed one run on four hits and two walks, and he also struck out eight.
Rays 6, Pirates 5
Isaac Paredes slashed a two-run, walk-off single as Tampa Bay rallied past Pittsburgh in St. Petersburg, Fla.
In the ninth with the visitors up 5-4, closer David Bednar (3-2) recorded the first two outs before walking Ji-Man Choi and Vidal Brujan. Then pinch hitter Jonathan Aranda singled off Bednar’s glove to fill the bases with two outs. Down 0-2 in the count, Paredes, who went 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, lined a ball to right field that sent Choi and Brujan across the plate.
Bligh Madris was 3-for-4 with a double, Jack Suwinski slugged a three-run homer and Diego Castillo added a solo shot for the Pirates, who were outhit 14-8 by the Rays.
Cardinals 5, Cubs 3
Ivan Herrera tallied the first RBI of his career as St. Louis edged Chicago to snap a two-game losing skid.
Herrera’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly broke a 3-3 tie and made a winner of reliever Ryan Helsley (3-0), who got the final five outs for the Cardinals. Juan Yepez’s one-out double triggered the winning rally. Pinch runner Edmundo Sosa took third on a wild pitch, and Harrison Bader was hit by a pitch. Herrera then plated the go-ahead run and Tommy Edman followed with an RBI single.
The Cubs had tied the game in the top of the frame when Rafael Ortega followed Christopher Morel’s single with a two-run homer off Giovanny Gallegos.
Mets 5, Marlins 3
Pete Alonso slugged two solo homers — including the go-ahead blast in the eighth inning — as New York defeated host Miami.
It was Alonso’s 14th career multi-homer game. He has 22 homers this season, and he leads the majors with 68 RBIs. New York’s Brandon Nimmo went 3-for-5 with a run-scoring double in the ninth, and Chris Bassitt (6-5) earned the win, allowing three runs, six hits and no walks. He struck out five.
After trailing 3-0, Miami scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth on Jesus Sanchez’s two-run homer. Bryan De La Cruz then evened things up in the fifth with a solo shot.
Rangers 3, Nationals 2
After making two nice defensive plays in the top of the ninth inning, Adolis Garcia delivered a walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth that lifted Texas to a win over Washington in Arlington, Texas.
The game-winning home run came on a 2-2 slider by reliever Kyle Finnegan (2-2). Garcia led off the inning with his 15th home run of the season. Joe Barlow (3-1) picked up the win, tossing a scoreless ninth.
Washington’s loss negated a stellar pitching performance by Josiah Gray. Making his 27th MLB start, Gray logged a career-high seven innings, giving up two runs, while striking out nine.
Orioles 6, White Sox 2
Spenser Watkins gave Baltimore five strong innings on the mound in his return to the major leagues and Austin Hays drilled a three-run double as Baltimore won a season-high fourth consecutive game by defeating host Chicago.
Watkins’ performance continued a trend of stellar pitching for the Orioles. Baltimore pitchers allowed a total of one run in the three previous games combined, though one of those games was rain-shortened to six innings.
White Sox starter Lance Lynn (1-1), who pitched just his third big-league game of the season, gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
A’s 9, Royals 7
Tony Kemp had two doubles and a home run as visiting Oakland defeated Kansas City, evening the three-game series.
Kemp scored three runs and drove in two to help the Athletics snap a four-game losing streak. Zach Jackson (2-2) picked up the win for Oakland. Lou Trivino earned his third save.
Neither starter lasted five innings. Jared Koenig, who earned his first career win against the Royals last Sunday, was pulled with two outs in the fifth after allowing three runs on five hits. Brad Keller (2-9) took the loss. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Brewers 5, Blue Jays 4
Corbin Burnes pitched effectively into the eighth and Andrew McCutchen belted a two-run homer as Milwaukee held on for a victory over visiting Toronto.
Burnes (6-4), the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, allowed three runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings, with nine strikeouts, two walks and one hit batter to win his third straight start.
Toronto pulled within 5-4 in the ninth with a run off Milwaukee closer Josh Hader. Matt Chapman doubled with two outs and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed with an RBI single to right. Hader got Gabriel Moreno on a bouncer to first for his 22nd save in 23 chances.
Red Sox 4, Guardians 2
Left fielder Alex Verdugo belted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to break open a close game and lead Boston to a victory over host Cleveland.
Cleveland starter Shane Bieber (3-4) was in complete command of the game and with two outs in the sixth, he quickly got J.D. Martinez in an 0-2 count.
That’s when the Red Sox came alive with three consecutive hits. Martinez and Xander Bogaerts singled before Verdugo pounced on a hanging curveball and drove it an estimated 447 feet for his fifth home run of the season.
Giants 9, Reds 2
San Francisco supported Logan Webb with four home runs and the right-hander delivered six innings of two-hit ball in a shellacking of visiting Cincinnati.
Evan Longoria, Thairo Estrada and Joc Pederson belted solo shots before Wilmer Flores broke the game open with a three-run blast, helping the Giants rebound from a series-opening 4-2 defeat on Friday night.
San Francisco outhit the visitors 9-5. The Reds had just one extra-base hit — Drury’s homer — in their eighth loss in the last nine games.
Twins 6, Rockies 0
Alex Kirilloff went 1-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, and four Minnesota pitchers combined for a one-hit shutout as host Minnesota topped Colorado.
Twins starter Chris Archer (2-3) allowed one hit — a single to C.J. Cron — walked one and struck out five in five scoreless innings. Relief pitchers Jharel Cotton, Griffin Jax and Tyler Thornburg followed Archer as the Rockies failed to notch another hit.
Rockies starter Antonio Senzatela (3-4) gave up four runs on eight hits in five innings. He walked two and struck out six.
Braves 5, Dodgers 3
Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help Atlanta recover after blowing a three-run lead to beat visiting Los Angeles.
Travis d’Arnaud led off the eighth with a double and Ozuna hit the second pitch he saw from Brusdar Graterol (2-3) over the center field fence for his 14th home run. The win evened the series at a game apiece and halted the Dodgers’ four-game winning streak.
The Dodgers tied the game — which the Braves once led 3-0 — when Will Smith hit the first pitch from reliever A.J. Minter (4-1) for a solo home run, his 11th. Kenley Jansen pitched a scoreless ninth inning against his former team, striking out the side to earn his 20th save.
