MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU) — Milwaukee Mayor Caviler Johnson says he’s instructed the city’s Police Department to begin writing tickets for those caught violating the city’s longstanding curfew for those under the age of 17.
The rule has been on the books for years but has rarely been enforced. It calls for those under 17 to be off public streets by 10 PM on weekdays and 11 PM on weekends.
The curfew ends at 5 AM on all days.
Fines of $94 can be given to the children, their parents could be fined up to $200.
Mayor Caviler Johnson previously enacted an 11 PM curfew for anyone under the age of 21 last Saturday and Sunday following a series of shooting incidents outside the Deer District and Fiserv Forum.
After Memorial Day, the curfew will move to 11 PM on all nights.
The curfew has been on the books in the city for many years, but until now has rarely been enforced.
