After the picking concluded in the NFL draft Saturday night, the Green Bay Packers and the rest of the league jumped into the free for all in signing undrafted college free agents. It’s a furious couple of hours making contact with and eventually signing players worth taking a look at this summer.
Traditionally, the Packers find a couple diamonds in that rough who make the team. Linebacker Khrys Barnes from a couple of years ago, safety Henry Black, defensive tackle Jack Heflin, edge rusher Tipa Galeai and tight end Dominique Dafney just to name a few.
Headlining the list this year is former University of Wisconsin wide receiver Danny Davis. In five years with the Badgers, Davis caught 131 balls for over 1600 yards and 14 touchdowns. One more wide receiver for good measure is Anthony Turner from Grand View College.
The team didn’t address the running back position during the draft but signed a pair, Tyler Goodson of Iowa who rushed for 1151 yards for the Hawkeyes last season and B.J. Taylor of Oregon State who put 1337 yards with 13 scores and was named first team All Pac-12.
After drafting three offensive linemen, the Packers signed two more, tackles Caleb Jones of Indiana who might be the biggest player in camp this summer at 6-9 and 370 pounds, along with George Moore of Oregon. Central Florida guard Cole Schneider also joins the mix.
As far as defensive players, the Packers signed outside linebacker Chauncey Manac from Louisiana-Lafayette, Ellis Brooks of Penn State and Caliph Brice from Florida Atlantic. Akial Byers is a defensive tackle from Missouri and Hauati Pututau played the same position at Utah. The one defensive back added is Raleigh Texada from Baylor.
