GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) — The German Rekordmeisters are coming to Titletown this summer.
The Green Bay Packers and officials from FC Bayern Munich and Manchester City announced Monday the two European club soccer giants will play a preseason match at Lambeau Field Saturday, July 26th at 6 PM in what will be known as the USA Cup.
“We are looking forward to hosting a different kind of football at Lambeau Field this summer as we welcome FC Bayern Munich and Manchester City to Green Bay,” said Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy in a statement on Monday. “Our home stadium is renowned for its history and tradition, and we’re honored to host two equally historic clubs from across the pond. We’re looking forward to seeing their devoted supporters from around the world attend Lambeau Field’s debut soccer match.”
It will be the first-ever soccer match played at the stadium and part of an effort to bring more outside events to the facility. It will also be a trade of sorts, with Green Bay giving up one of their ten combined Preseason and Regular-Season home games this year to play a game in London.
Bayern just secured their tenth straight German Bundesliga title and have several European titles along with DFB Pokal (a competition open to all men’s soccer clubs in Germany including professional and semi-pro teams) championships as well. Manchester City are currently in a battle with Liverpool for England’s Premier League title and are one of the final four clubs left competing for this year’s European Champions League title.
Tickets for the match will go on sale this week in phases. Bayern and Man City season ticket holders will get the first crack over the next two days, Packers season ticket holders will get a presale on Thursday, and general public tickets will go on sale Friday at 10 AM through Ticketmaster.
