A small park adjacent to the City of Sheboygan will be getting special attention on Earth Day weekend thanks to efforts of a group restoring trees around Sheboygan County.
Rudy Mahler Park, which is just northeast of 10th and Eisner Avenue in the Town of Sheboygan, will receive over 65 trees thanks to the Sheboygan Rotary Club through its Restoration Of Our Trees Sheboygan, or “ROOTS” organization, along with the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership. The effort begins at 8 a.m. Saturday, kicking off Phase-2 of a county-wide effort to restore urban and rural forests devastated by the invasive Emerald Ash Borer. Phase-1 wrapped up last fall with restoration efforts at the Town of Sheboygan Firehouse Park.
Cash grants from ROOTS, the LNRP, Rotary District 6270 and funds from the U.S. Forest Service were steered towards the project, while the Town also collaborated with the Lions Club and ROOTS to recruit labor, equipment, material and cash for a total project value of $20,000.
Sheboygan County has some 17 million trees at risk from the Emerald Ash Borer, and an estimated 70% of the public tree canopy in the Town of Sheboygan, which hosts Rudy Mahler Park, is comprised of ash trees. In total, around $1.5 million is being spent in Sheboygan County and eastern Wisconsin to restore our forests.
