SUPERIOR, WI (WSAU) – The day after his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden traveled to Superior to discuss how his “Build Back Better” law could replace an aging bridge between Wisconsin and Minnesota.
The Blatnik Bridge, built in 1961, is nearing the end of its useful life. It handles 33,000 vehicles between Superior and Duluth. As it has aged, a weight limit of 40-tons for trucks was put in place.
Biden’s prepared remarks describe the Blatnick Bridge as “deteriorated”.
He said under Build Back Better, Wisconsin and Minnesota could use some of their infrastructure money to replace it. The states will receive a combined $10.2-billion.
Biden notes that Wisconsin has 979 bridges in poor condition; Minnesota has 661.
