A man was hit by a tree and severely injured near Hilbert on Wednesday according to the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office.
Lieutenant Eric Voland says they received the report of the incident near North Marx Road in the Town of Woodville at around 10:45 AM. Deputies and First Responders were told the victim was almost a half mile from the roadway, requiring them to navigate difficult terrain that included muddy fields, swampy areas and the woods before being able to help he victim.
The 21-year-old man was part of a group cutting down trees in the wooded area when he was struck by a falling tree, but not pinned beneath it. He was transported to ThedaCare Neenah by Gold Cross Ambulance and is in critical condition.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says that by many measures, logging is the most dangerous occupation in the United States.
