2021 was a good year for corn, at least in the eyes of one Sheboygan County farmer.
Steve Wilkens, who farms near Random Lake, took second place in the National Corn Yield Contest conducted by the National Corn Growers Association.
Wilkins, who also serves as an agronomy manager with Syngenta which developed his win-producing โGolden Harvestโ hybrid, took second place with a yield of over 315 bushels per acre of no-till, non-irrigated land. Three other Wisconsin farms produced prize-winning yields in other categories including two first-place finishes.
Wilkins said that attention to detail, continual learning and fine-tuning practices are paramount to raising high-yield corn, and he advises corn farmers to experiment with a subset of their acres to find what works for them.
Besides corn, Wilkens also produces soybeans and was re-elected to the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board representing Sheboygan, Manitowoc, Ozaukee, Washington and five other southeastern Wisconsin counties this past October.
