When Nathaniel Hackett was introduced as the Denver Broncos new Head Coach last Friday, it got Packer Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s assistant coaching carousel spinning. Hackett had sought permission from the Packers to bring Offensive Line Coach Adam Stenavich out west with him to become Denver’s Offensive Coordinator. The Packers have made the pre-emptive move by promoting Stenavich, a Marshfield native to the OC job in Green Bay. The team made the move official today.
Another staff member is apparently on the way out however as Quarterback Coach/Passing Game Coordinator Luke Getsy is leaving to become the new Offensive Coordinator with the Chicago Bears for newly hired Head Coach Matt Ebeflus. And Hackett may not be done trying to lure another former colleague to Denver as Tight Ends Coach Justin Outten may now be in line for the Broncos’ Coordinator Job.
If it all plays out that way, LaFleur may consider promoting Offensive Line Assistant Luke Butkus to the full time job with the Offensive Line and he will be searching for a new Tight Ends Coach.
Still unresolved is the Special Teams Coordinator position. Maurice Drayton, who succeeded Shawn Mennenga a year ago, had trouble fielding a competent unit that finished dead last in Rick Gosselin’s annual NFL Special Teams ranking and of course, there were the issues that proved costly in the NFC Divisional Playoff loss to San Francisco with a blocked field and blocked punt that resulted in the 49ers only touchdown in San Francisco’s 13-10 upset of the Packers.
The staff juggling may have to wait another week as LaFleur and his Packer staff is heading to Las Vegas to coach the NFC squad in this weekend’s Pro Bowl at Allegiant Stadium.
