Having a baby comes with many challenges, not the least of which is giving that new boy or girl the name that will stay with them for life. Locally, HSHS St. Nicholas Hospital has tallied the most popular names for babies born there, and the lists bear surprising similarity to other areas of the state and nation.
In 2021, Liam was the most popular name given to a baby boy born at St. Nick, followed by the names of Landon, Jackson, Jack, Finley and Callan tied for runner-up. Head to HSHS’s St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay and you’ll find Jackson was picked most often, with Liam and Hudson tied for second.
The most frequent name for girls in Sheboygan was Olivia, while Evelyn and Felicity were tied for runner-up. In Green Bay, the girls top honor goes to Harper, followed by a tie between Charlotte and Scarlett.
The most recent national list from Social Security is from 2020, and the top three boys’ names last year were Oliver, Liam and Henry. For girls in the U.S., Charlotte, Olivia and Evelyn took spots one, two and three.
According to the scholarly resource organization JSTOR, experts dispute the reasons behind the commonalities, but pop culture is a strong contender. What they do agree upon is that over time, the variety of names is becoming more diverse.
