WAUKESHA, WI (WSAU) — The temporary memorial to the six victims of the Waukesha Chrismas Parade tragedy has been removed, with plans for a permanent one in the months ahead.
The city council is set to meet on January 18th to begin discussions on what a permanent memorial would look like and how to fund it. Specifics of those discussions are not yet available, nor is a timeline for when a permanent memorial would be dedicated.
It’s expected the city will create a Commission to work with city leaders and those impacted to find the best place and design for the memorial. That commission will consist of both community members and elected officials.
The makeshift memorial had been located in the city’s Veteran’s Park and included crosses, flags, candles, teddy bears, and baseballs to honor those who died after being hit by an SUV that plowed through the parade route. All of those items have been removed and are being curated by the city’s historical society.
In the name of closure for those affected by the tragedy, the city will hold a brief closing ceremony for the memorial on Wednesday at 8 AM. All are welcome to attend that event
