Hospitals within the Advocate Aurora system in Wisconsin and Illinois are showing the effects of a pandemic that’s far from over in either state.
Advocate Aurora in Wisconsin is treating 349 patients as of Monday, a 16.7% increase in the last week and up 47.9% compared to a month ago. The Illinois system has seen a 15.2% increase in the last week, and is up 175.9% since this time in November.
Aurora’s Director of Infectious Disease and Prevention Dr. Robert Citronberg acknowledges that some patients are fully vaccinated. However he said that they make up only 8% of patients, and one-third of those are immunocompromised. Almost three-quarters (74%) of patients never received a vaccine shot, and the remaining 18% are only partially vaccinated or due for a booster. Citronberg said the numbers make a clear case for the importance of getting vaccinated to avoid hospitalization and serious disease.
