1,586 deer were tagged in Sheboygan County during the 9-day gun deer season that concluded this past Sunday.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources indicates that 698 antlered deer and 888 antlerless deer were tagged during the hunt, adding 322 antlered deer, and 524 antlerless deer since the first weekend’s tally.
Numbers were down 18% from 2020, when 1,932 deer were harvested here. That’s 346 more than this year. Statewide, numbers for the 9-day gun hunt were down 7.9% from 2020. Once the archery/crossbow and youth hunts are counted in, Sheboygan County has yielded 2,515 deer so far in 2021.
Preliminary numbers in from the DNR show 175,667 deer registered statewide this time around, including 84,952 antlered and 90,715 antlerless deer. Authorities say the lower numbers are due in part to a growing influence of earlier seasons on the cumulative harvest. Archery season opened on September 18th this year and lasts until January 9th. Still to come – the muzzleloader, December antlerless-only, and the antlerless-only Holiday Hunts.
