The Minnesota Twins and center fielder Byron Buxton have agreed on a seven-year, $100 million extension, according to multiple reports on Sunday.
Buxton reportedly received a full no-trade clause and can earn bonuses for plate appearances and finishing in the top 10 in MVP balloting. Buxton would receive an $8 million bonus for winning the MVP.
The 27-year-old Buxton was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent following the 2022 season. He reportedly turned down a seven-year, $73 million offer from the Twins in July.
Buxton established career bests of 19 home runs and a .306 average despite being limited to 61 games last season due to hip and hand injuries. He also had 32 RBIs and 23 doubles.
Staying healthy has been an issue for the Twins’ No. 2 overall pick in 2012. He has played more than 100 games just once, that coming in 2017 when he batted .253 with 16 homers and a career-high 51 RBIs in 140 games and won a Gold Glove for his defense.
Buxton is a lifetime .248 hitter with 70 home runs, 100 doubles, 204 RBIs and 71 stolen bases in seven seasons with Minnesota.
