The Iowa State Fair recently held the 39th Governor’s Charity Steer Show and broke a record for money raised. The show brought in almost $350,000, which goes straight to Ronald McDonald House Charities.
“You know, what a great event for Iowa, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show. One of the best parts of it is to be able to get to know new people and there are just a lot of great stories all around from you and I talking about my granddaughter being at Ronald McDonald House and other people being helped. It just is a great event,” said Former Iowa Secretary of Ag Bill Northey.
For his family, this year’s event hit home a little harder than normal. “Yeah, you know we had a perfectly healthy granddaughter in February, and then she came down with a disease that meant her bone marrow wasn’t creating its blood components that were needed,” he said. “Was diagnosed and said she needed a bone marrow transplant, so she went up and had that about six weeks ago. She’ll spend about three months or 100 days in that area.”
Altogether, the annual steer show has raised almost $4.5 million for sick kids and their families. “It’s a pretty meaningful thing, to be able to help families just like that and many of them without the prognosis our granddaughter has,” Northey explained. With that being said, his granddaughter’s expected to make a full recovery.
