Efforts by the Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation have paid off, as 34 Sheboygan County restaurants and businesses were awarded a total of $4.7 million in July. The money was made available as part of the federal American Rescue Plan to help businesses weather pandemic-related losses. Eligible businesses included bars, restaurants, food trucks, breweries, bakeries and wineries, and the money awarded wonโt need to be repaid if protocols are followed.
The campaign by the SCEDC to enroll local businesses began shortly after the program was announced, and as it turns out, competition was fierce for the funds. The Small Business Association, which administered the program, says that less than 10 days after the application window opened on May 3rd, it had received requests for more than twice the $28.6 Billion that Congress had provided for the grants.
The SCEDC says it jumped on social media, sent postcards to over 400 Sheboygan County dining establishments, and also collaborated with the Sheboygan County Health Department and local Chambers of Commerce to send over 600 emails to eligible candidates.
SCEDC Business Counselor Ray York said the funds will help many of Sheboygan Countyโs food & beverage establishments continue to serve the community as places to congregate, build bonds and strengthen relationships.
