The rate of new positive tests for the coronavirus is rising in Sheboygan County, much as it has been across the State of Wisconsin.
For most of last week, the seven-day average of confirmed new cases of COVID-19 in Sheboygan County was 2. By Monday, State Department of Health Service Statistics raised that to 3.29 as another 16 cases were added since Thursday’s weekly update from the County Division of Public Health. 13,933 Sheboygan County residents have now had confirmed positive tests for the disease and 34 cases are now active, up 11 from 23 on Friday – the latest previous date available on the County’s Coronavirus Dashboard.
Concern has been increasing as the highly-contagious Delta variant of the virus becomes more widespread across the country and Wisconsin. Studies show that antibodies produced by previous coronavirus infections might not protect against the variant, resulting in repeat cases of COVID-19 among those who’ve already had to battle the disease. As a result, efforts to encourage vaccinations are becoming more urgent. Current vaccines have been shown to provide protection against the Delta variant, however that protection might not be quite as vigorous as with the original strains of the virus.
Sheboygan County continues struggling to reach even 50% of residents with at least one shot – that figure now stands at 49.5%. 47.6% are now fully vaccinated, and 851 doses of vaccine were administered here last week. The County DPH reminds residents that there’s a free walk-in vaccine clinic at its North 8th Street headquarters across from Fountain Park every Wednesday between 9 AM and 4 PM.
