(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) June 11, 2021 – In his fifth year behind the wheel of a Plymouth Dirt Track Racing B Mod, Sheboygan Falls competitor Phil Campanella has been making his presence felt on a consistent basis in weekly action at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis.
The Racine native, who works as an electrician and in assembly at MB Companies in Chilton, has been driven to succeed in the highly competitive world of dirt track racing ever since he was introduced to the sport in his youth.
“My uncle, Don Durham, ran Sprint Cars for many years in the early-to-mid 1990s at Wilmot Raceway and that is what first got me interested in dirt track racing,” Campanella said. “I helped him out in the pits with friends whenever needed.”
With racing in his blood, Campanella got his feet wet running enduro events with the Wisconsin-based Impact Survival Series.
“I started racing enduro races with the Impact Survival Series in 2014,” Campanella said. “I did that for three years before getting into the B Mod in 2017.”
After persevering through his fair share of growing pains in the Plymouth Dirt Track Racing B Mod division, over the past five seasons, one race stands out as a clear highlight for Campanella.
“My career racing highlight so far is my first heat race win in a B Mod at Plymouth in 2020,” Campanella said. “That is a great memory and something I will never forget.”
While tempers may flare at times on the track in the heat of battle, Campanella enjoys the helpful and friendly camaraderie that prevails more often than not throughout the PDTR pit area.
“What I enjoy most about racing is the competition and the the family atmosphere at the race track,” Campanella said. “On the track, everyone is just another competitor, but off the track everyone is part of a group that’s willing to help one another.”
Through the first five race nights of the 2021 Plymouth Dirt Track Racing season, Campanella stands ninth in the B Mod point standings, while earning a heat race victory on May 8.
“My goal his year is to finish in the top 10 in points in the B Mod division at The Plymouth Dirt Track,” Campanella said. “In order to do that I need to stay out of trouble on the track and continue to learn.”
For those wondering what the “AA” represents in the rather unique 13AA number on the side of Campanella’s B Mod, it’s all about family for the Sheboygan Falls competitor.
“The double A in the number stands for the first initials in my daughter’s name, Alaina, as well as the first initial of my girlfriend’s son’s name, Austun,” Campanella said. “Having the ‘AA’ added to the number on the car was my way of including both kids on the race car.”
The members of Campanella’s pit crew include Tiffany Perl, Austun Perl and the Crazy G clan (Gary Glander and family).
Sponsors for Campanella’s team are LeMahieu Tree Service, Salon 511, D&L Acres, Cupcake Wonders, Retro Tire, Robby at Pleasant View Realty, RRP, General Beverage, Burntcreations, Rocky Rococo of Sheboygan, 11th Street Auto, Crazy G Design and Tiffany’s Treasures.
“I would like to extend a huge ‘thank you’ to my fans, supporters and sponsors,” Campanella said. “Without them, none of this would be possible.”
