Sheboygan prides itself in an abundance of beaches, and with the arrival of the summer season the Sheboygan Police Department is reminding residents that there are rules to follow when having fun on the lake with personal watercraft…or Jet Skis.
In particular, Sheboygan doesn’t allow Jet Skis to be launched, landed or rested on city beachfronts. These personal water craft must be launched from an approved city boat launch area, and if you want to use a beach with them, you’ll have to moor offshore. Also, if you launch from the Harbor Centre Marina, you’ll have to pay the $7 launch fee just like a regular boat. However, Jet Skis can be launched for free from the North Point Park boat launch.
Wisconsin law states that children must be at least 12 years of age and pass a certification before they can operate a jet ski, and be at least 16 to rent or lease one. Other rules require “slow, no wake speeds” when you’re within 200 feet of shore, or within 100 feet of any other vessel including another jet ski, dock, pier or raft.
