The Memorial Day holiday usually brings some of the heaviest, and often most dangerous volumes of highway traffic on Wisconsin roadways. With pandemic restrictions being lifted the Wisconsin State Patrol expects that they’ll be just as busy keeping things flowing safely. And one way they’ll do that is by joining the annual nationwide “Click It Or Ticket” campaign to reinforce the message to Buckle Up!
The effort, which runs through June 6th, will use designated federal funds to support enhanced law enforcement efforts as well as a media campaign, many featuring Green Bay Packers’ all-time leading receiver and Click It Or Ticket spokesperson Donald Driver.
Wisconsin’s primary seat belt law allows law enforcement to stop and cite motorists for failing to wear a seat belt, and drivers can also be cited for each passenger that’s unbuckled. That resulted in over 27,000 convictions last year.
Wisconsin State Patrol Superintendent Anthony Burrell said that they aren’t handing out tickets for the thrill of it, but to prevent tragedy, since the 11% who don’t buckle up accounted for almost half of highway fatalities last year. So remember to Click It – Or Ticket!
