The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in Sheboygan is gearing up for a year-long campaign of safety, starting on Saturday with the launch of National Safe Boating Week. The main message is that life jackets save lives, but the key to making that work is consistent wearing by recreational boaters.
According to the Coast Guard, 86% of all drownings in 2019 were because the victims weren’t wearing their floatation devices. And if that’s because you don’t like the feel of the jackets, the Auxiliary wants you to know that the new life jackets are much more comfortable, lightweight and stylish than the old orange ones you probably remember.
There’s another change boaters need to be aware of: a new federal law now requires the use of an engine cut-off switch by any vessels that are equipped with it. The so-called ECOS device is required equipment on new crafts. And if you’re not sure about whether your boat is ready, you can get a free safety check on your power boat or paddle craft. No citations or fees will be issued, and you’ll know that you’re ready for safe fun on the water.
