Texas Ag Commissioner Side Miller is suing the Biden administration on claims that the COVID-19 relief plan, which was passed last month discriminates against white farmers. According to the Texas Tribune, he is suing the federal government as a private citizen, not on behalf of the state of Texas.
The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 gives funding to “socially disadvantaged” farmers, which are defined as people of color. This is where Miller’s complaint comes into play. He explains that the definition in the new act forgets to include “white ethnic groups that have unquestionably suffered” as well. Some examples would be people of Irish, Italian, German, Jewish, or Eastern European descent.
Attorneys involved in the case are seeking class-action status for the lawsuit on behalf of white farmers. The suit is being sponsored by America First Legal.
