Senator Tammy Baldwin reintroduced the DAIRY PRIDE Act, which would stop non-dairy products from using dairy terms on their labeling. The full title of the bill is The Defending Against Imitations and Replacements of Yogurt, milk, and cheese to Promote Regular Intake of Dairy Everyday Act.
This is the third time that the act has been brought up. First, it was introduced in 2017, then again in 2019, and now in 2021. Baldwin explained that it’s frustrating because the Food and Drug Administration has regulations that define dairy products as being from a dairy animal, but they don’t enforce anything.
“The Food and Drug Administration should actually do its job and make sure that terms like milk, cream, ice cream, yogurt, are reserved for dairy products,” she went on to explain her frustration, “It’s aggravating to me, too. The FDA has taken the position that this food labeling is not a high priority over many years, and we want to make it a high priority for them.”
If everything goes as planned, the FDA would have to issue nationwide guidelines enforcing mislabeled fake dairy products within 90 days.
