David Peralta went 5-for-6 with a home run and a career-high seven RBIs as the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks claimed a 14-11, 10-inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, closing out a three-game sweep.
Arizona extended its winning streak to four games when Asdrubal Cabrera opened the 10th on second base and scored on Josh Rojas’ single up the middle off Lucas Sims (0-1). A hit, a walk and two outs later, Peralta delivered a bases-clearing triple off Cionel Perez and Carson Kelly added an insurance run with a solo homer.
Cincinnati scored three runs in the bottom of the 10th but lost its fourth straight despite blasting six home runs, including two by Jesse Winker, who drove in three runs and is 11-for-32 during his seven-game hitting streak.
Nick Castellanos, Joey Votto, Eugenio Suarez and Jonathan India also homered for Cincinnati, which has lost five straight meetings to the Diamondbacks.
Cubs 4, Mets 3 (10 innings)
Jason Heyward delivered a one-out RBI single in the 10th inning for host Chicago, who completed a three-game sweep of New York.
The Cubs entered the series with just 51 runs in 15 games but outscored the Mets 23-8 in the series.
Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer in the fourth and J.D. Davis tied the game with a pinch-hit RBI double in the seventh for the Mets.
Mariners 7, Red Sox 3 (10 innings)
Mitch Haniger hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning as Seattle rallied to defeat host Boston in the opener of a four-game series.
The Mariners managed just three hits — the others were doubles by Ty France and Sam Haggerty — but got the most out of them despite only one hit through the first nine innings. Mariners right-hander Rafael Montero (2-0) earned the victory after retiring the side in order in the ninth.
Red Sox right-hander Nick Pivetta didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning, when France tied the game with a two-run double with two outs. Pivetta went six innings, allowing the two runs on one hit with three walks and four strikeouts. Boston’s Rafael Devers had two hits and a homer.
Yankees 6, Indians 3
Rougned Odor ripped a go-ahead, two-run single with two outs in the seventh inning to fuel visiting New York to a victory over Cleveland.
Kyle Higashioka belted a homer to lead off the eighth inning and Gleyber Torres had an RBI single to highlight his three-hit performance for the Yankees.
Cesar Hernandez had three hits and scored a run for the Indians, who squandered an early 3-0 lead to spoil manager Terry Francona’s 62nd birthday. The loss was Cleveland’s fourth in the past five games. New York won for just the second time in eight games.
Pirates 4, Tigers 2
Erik Gonzalez drove in two runs, Adam Frazier rapped three hits and scored twice, and Pittsburgh topped host Detroit.
Colin Moran drove in the go-ahead run for Pittsburgh, while Bryan Reynolds reached base three times, scored two runs and drove in another.
Starting pitcher Mitch Keller gave up two runs on five hits with five strikeouts in five innings. Sam Howard (2-1) got two outs in relief and picked up the win. Richard Rodriguez recorded the final three outs for his third save.
Padres 3, Dodgers 2
Rookie left-hander Ryan Weathers went 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his second career start and Trent Grisham hit a home run as San Diego got the jump on host Los Angeles with a victory in the opener of a four-game series.
Former Dodger Manny Machado gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on an RBI single. Grisham’s solo home run in the sixth, his fourth homer of the season, increased the advantage to 2-0.
AJ Pollock and Sheldon Neuse hit back-to-back home runs for the Dodgers, while right-hander Walker Buehler gave up two runs on four hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts. The Dodgers have lost three of their last four after starting the season 13-2.
Astros 8, Angels 2
Cristian Javier pitched five scoreless innings in his return to the rotation as Houston snapped a five-game home losing streak with an easy win over Los Angeles.
Carlos Correa and Alex Bregman provided multi-hit, multi-RBI games for the Astros, who had lost nine of their past 10 overall. Javier (2-0) allowed three hits and struck out nine, with his first eight outs recorded via strikeout. Javier became the first Houston pitcher to accomplish that feat since Jim Deshaies on Sept. 23, 1986.
Albert Pujols clubbed a two-run home run, his third, for the Angels. Mike Trout departed with an elbow contusion in the fifth, an inning after being hit by a pitch on his left elbow pad. Angels manager Joe Maddon said after the game that he expects Trout to be able to play in Friday’s rematch.
Giants 3, Marlins 0
Aaron Sanchez and four relievers made the most of a three-run first inning, combining on a two-hit shutout as San Francisco opened a seven-game homestand with a shutout victory over Miami.
The shutout was the Giants’ second straight over the Marlins. Sanchez (1-1) worked the first five innings Thursday, allowing two hits and no walks. He struck out two. He allowed a game-opening single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and a two-out single to Jon Berti in the second inning before retiring the last 10 batters he faced.
Daniel Castano (0-1) gave up hits to three of the first six batters he faced. He allowed only two other hits in his five-inning outing and left charged with three runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
