MADISON, WI (WSAU) — Members of the Dane County Board of Supervisors are pressuring their Sheriff to end the use of no-knock warrants.
While the board cannot ban the tactic per se, they are proposing a resolution that would ask Dave Mahoney to discontinue the practice according to a report in the Wisconsin Journal Sentinel.
Police reform advocates have called for a ban on the practice. Sheriff Mahoney says they can prevent armed stand-offs between law enforcement and suspects.
Dane County executed no-knock warrants 11 times in 2020.
Mahoney is retiring from his post as Sheriff effective May 8th. Kalvin D Barrett has been appointed to serve in the position until the post comes up for election again in November 2022.
