MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — COVID-19 transmission continues to rise in Wisconsin.
For the first time in more than two months, Wisconsin has seen 1,000-plus new coronavirus cases on back-to-back days.
The state Department of Health Services reported 1,092 positive tests, or 19.8% of the 5,514 total. With Thursday’s 1,046 cases, it marked the first time since Feb. 4-5 with two consecutive days of more than 1,000 cases. The seven-day average increased to 733, its highest level since Feb. 16.
Five new deaths were linked to COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. The seven-day average of new deaths held steady at six.
Overall, Wisconsin has seen 583,935 total cases and 6,672 deaths. DHS lists 568,453 people as having recovered from COVID-19.
The total number of vaccine doses administered in the state rose to 3,380,401 as of Friday. The number of people who had received at least one dose was 2,089,526, or 35.9% of the population. The number who had completed their vaccine course was 1,330,471, or 22.9%.
Current hospitalizations on Friday changed little compared to Thursday. The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported treating 290 COVId-19 patients, four more than on Thursday and 46 more than a week earlier. Of those, 74 were in intensive care, six fewer than on Thursday but 14 more than a week earlier.
In the Northeast region, there were 24 hospitalizations, the same as on Thursday and eight fewer than a week earlier. Three of those were in ICUs, one fewer than on Thursday and four fewer than a week earlier. Fox Valley region hospitals reported 20 COVID-19 patients, down one in a day but up six over a week. Seven of those were in ICUs, up one in a day and four over a week.
