MILWAUKEE, WI (WSAU-WRN) — An undisclosed number of Brewers players and staffers received the single-shot Johnson and Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on Monday before heading to Chicago for the start of their next series against the Cubs.
President of Baseball Operations David Sterns said an undisclosed number of players took the shot at an event put on by the team and the city of Milwaukee’s Health Department. “To the extent that we can serve as an example and our players can encourage others to go get the vaccine and take the appropriate public health measures that our officials are urging us to take is a positive,” said Sterns.
He emphasized that the team will not be releasing a list of players who did or did not take the vaccine but did say that a “good chunk” of the roster is vaccinated.
Monday was the first day that anyone over the age of 16 was eligible to make vaccination appointments in the state of Wisconsin. The latest statistics show that about 20% of residents have received at least one dose of vaccine.
Sterns says the players and team personnel have been talking for weeks about getting the shot, calling it an important discussion in the clubhouse. “We are very mindful that the way we get back to normal and keep our players and the community healthy is to get as many people vaccinated as possible. It’s true within our organization and our clubhouse, and it’s certainly true in our greater community.”
