MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — New coronavirus cases and seven-day averages in Wisconsin are back above 500 as everyone 16 and older in the state becomes vaccine eligible next week.
The state Department of Health Services reported 588 new cases on Tuesday, a significant increase from Monday. Tuesday’s cases comprised of 15.7% of the 3,751 total tests.
The seven-day average rose to 501 cases, marking the first time above 500 since March 4. Eleven more deaths were also added, keeping the seven-day average at four.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 576,632 confirmed cases and 6,612 deaths. DHS considers 563,133 people to have recovered from COVID-19.
Hospitalizations increased on Tuesday. The Wisconsin Hospital Association reported treating 250 COVID-19 patients, 23 more than on Monday and 33 more than a week earlier. Of those, 66 were in intensive care, eight more than on Monday and seven more than a week earlier.
Northeast region hospitals said they were treating 27 COVID-19 patients, up four in a day but down two over a week. Six of those were in ICUs, three more than on Monday but three fewer than a week earlier. In the Fox Valley region, there were 15 COVID-19 patients, down two in a day and flat over a week. One of those was in an ICU, down one in a day and flat over a week.
