A redistricting group called the People’s Maps Commission has been holding virtual public hearings in each of Wisconsin’s congressional districts for the past several months, and it’s our 6th District’s turn this Thursday.
The session will run from 5:30 until 8:30 PM, and the deadline to register for a three-minute slot to comment is today at 5:00. Written comments can also be submitted without deadline.
Redrawing the congressional and state legislative district boundaries is done every ten years, usually behind closed doors by politically-biased committees, and Governor Evers created the People’s Maps Commission last year to come up with a less political solution than the usual gerrymandering that crafts boundaries that favor one party.
Thursday’s comments will be reviewed by a nonpartisan, nine-member panel which will then draw the proposed redistricting maps. Ultimately, though, the final maps are the responsibility of the legislature, and subject to veto by the Governor.
