While a power shortage due to severe winter weather in Texas is making the news headlines, Alliant Energy wants its customers here in the Midwest to know that they’re prepared to meet the energy needs of all its customers.
Even with increased demand, the utility is projecting enough supply to meet the needs of its natural gas and electric customers, and they’re offering tips to reduce energy use while still staying warm and safe.
The extended cold wave will undoubtedly lead to higher energy bills, and those needing help paying them can call 211 to learn about options. At the same time, smart energy use can help keep the heat up – and bills down.
Alliant recommends turning thermostats down at night and when you’re away, let the sun in for natural heat during the day, and shut the shades at night to help keep that heat in. Using bathroom and kitchen fans is fine if they’re shut off when no longer needed, and limiting outside air infiltration can be done by blocking drafty doors and windows, and going in and outside as little as possible.
