WASHINGTON, DC (WTAQ) — Wisconsin’s Democratic US Senator says she supports moving ahead with the impeachment of former President Donald Trump for what Democrats say is his role in inciting the January 6th riot at the US Capitol.
“Our former president incited a violent insurrection,” Senator Tammy Baldwin told WTAQ’s ‘The Morning News with Matt and Earl’. “This is something that cannot just be swept under the rug.”
Democrats have repeated that refrain: that President Trump incited supporters to attack the US Capitol, since the riot occurred.
However, Baldwin says there’s another reason they want to see Trump impeached: to prevent him from running for office again.
“We have a former president who is dabbling with the idea of running for president again,” Baldwin said. “The fourteenth amendment makes it possible for Congress to say ‘no you can’t do that again.’”
Fourty-five Republican senators are on record saying they believe the impeachment trial is unconstitutional, which means Democrats will likely be short of the number required to convict Trump for ‘Incitement of Insurrection’.
The trial is set to begin next month.
