(Reuters) – Police arrested a juvenile on Monday in the shooting deaths of a pregnant woman, her unborn child and four others found at a home in Indianapolis and authorities said the mass killing “does not appear to be random.”
The youth, who was not identified, was apprehended in a “homicide arrest” a day after the gruesome scene was uncovered by police at about 4 a.m. local time on Sunday, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement.
Authorities were led to the crime scene by a juvenile male suffering gunshot wounds who was found on the street nearby and may be the only survivor of the violence, police said.
“From what detectives know at the very early stages of this investigation this does not appear to be random,” police said in the statement.
Authorities have not released information about a potential motive or about the suspect’s relationship with the victims. The suspect was not identified, and the Marion County Prosecutors Office was still determining charges, police said.
The victims were identified as Kezzie Childs, 42, Raymond Childs, 42, Elijah Childs, 18, Rita Childs, 13, Kiara Hawkins, 19, and “Baby Boy Hawkins,” the unborn child of Kiara Hawkins, police said.
“One of the individuals was pregnant and transported to an area hospital,” the police statement said. “Despite the best life-saving efforts provided by medical staff, both the female and the unborn child did not survive.”
