MADISON, WI (WSAU) The GOP-controlled state legislature will vote this week on whether to overturn Governor Tony Ever’s mask mandate.
The measure was introduced Thursday, and is likely to come up for a vote on Tuesday.
27 Republican lawmakers have signed the resolution.
Governor Evers signed a new state public health emergency that would extend the mask mandate through March 20.
Under state law, the Governor can issue public health emergencies for up to 60 days. After that, approval from the legislature is needed. Evers has issued consecutive emergency orders over COVID-19. That is being challenged at the state Supreme Court, which has already heard arguments but hasn’t issued a ruling yet.
Striking down the mask order would need to be approved by both the assembly and the state senate. Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says said he prefers the matter play out through the courts.
