SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Calling it a “tremendous honor” to have served as Mayor of Sheboygan, Mike Vandersteen on Friday announced his intent to run for a third term in the 2021 Spring Election.
Vandersteen was first elected to the city’s top office in 2013, then reelected 4 years later. The Mayor cited his record in fulfilling campaign promises from past elections, such as strengthening neighborhoods and increasing recycling, and noted nearly tripling the mileage of road resurfacing as part of a long-term plan to completely address the streets. Vandersteen said he would use his next term to keep that plan on track.
The mayor said there will be new challenges due to COVID-19, such as decreased revenue, and measures have already been taken to address some of that within the city budget, but his concern extends beyond City Hall. The mayor said that “the thing that really scares me is the precarious position that many of our small business people are in,” and, “We’ve also put several programs together where they can apply for funding, and of course the federal government has other programs for payroll protection programs and things like that that they’ve been able to apply for, so, that’s the scary part…that many of these businesses are going to disappear and that’s going to be a lot tougher to keep those employment numbers up because the small businesses employ so many people in our community.”
Others have expressed interest in running against Vandersteen on April 6th, but no official announcements have yet been received.
