SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Votes cast in Sheboygan Wards 2 and 3 during the November General Election will be undergoing an audit. The wards were randomly selected by the Wisconsin Elections Commission and are among at least 184 reporting units across the state.
The audit ensures that the voting equipment is accurately counting ballots according to federal standards, which is 1 error in 500,000 ballots, and isn’t meant to verify an accurate vote prior to certification. The two wards in Sheboygan utilize the Clear Ballot, or “Clear Cast” voting system.
The audit consists of two independent hand-tallies of ballots tabulated by electronic voting systems. Those results are verified against the results report produced by the voting system. The direct audit will begin at 9 AM Monday at Sheboygan City Hall and will continue until completed. The deadline for that is November 25th.
There should be no cost to the city, as the WEC reimburses a $50 setup fee and 35-cents per ballot audited. However any failures could result in orders to purchase new equipment.
