UNDATED (WSAU) – The FBI is investigating $2.4-million that’s missing from a Republican-party campaign account in Wisconsin. The money is missing from the Republican Party of Wisconsin’s “federal account’ — intended to assist Donald Trump’s reelection efforts in the state.
The Wisconsin GOP chair Andrew Hitt tells the Associated Press that the money was stolen by hackers. The FBI hasn’t commented on the case.
Hitt said they noticed unusual activity last Thursday, and notified the FBI the following day. He says the hack started with a series of fake invoices, which steered payments to the hackers’ accounts.
The money was used to help the Trump campaign with re-election activity. Hilt says the missing funds put the GOP at a disadvantage at a critical time in a battleground state. He says the money would have been used to make last-minute decisions in the closing days of the campaign.
