MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) – The University of Wisconsin-Madison plans to furlough employees for the first six months of next year.
Wisconsin’s flagship state university is trying to offset lost revenue caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Chancellor Rebecca Blank says the furloughs and continued hiring freeze won’t be enough to balance the school’s budget. She says more cuts will be announced in the next few weeks, but that officials should be able to avoid the sort of dramatic cuts that many feared.
Blank sent an email discussing the future with students, faculty, and staff on Monday.
UW System Interim President Tommy Thompson says he still hopes to negotiate additional aid with Tony Evers and the GOP-controlled state legislature.
