MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The group attempting to recall Democratic Governor Tony Evers says they fell short of the required number of signatures needed to trigger a special election.
Misty Polewczynski posted on the “Recall Evers Petition” Facebook page on Monday that the group did not collect the required 670,000 signatures, but would not say how many signatures they did collect.
Polewczynski adds that the petitions that were collected will be destroyed, in part so that those who signed them can remain anonymous should they so choose.
The group held signing events across the state over the last few weeks in an attempt to force a recall, in part because they didn’t agree with how Evers has been handling the COVID-19 pandemic. Should their attempts have been successful, it would have been the second recall election in less than ten years. In June of 2012, Republican Governor Scott Walker was recalled but successfully defended his seat by holding off Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett by a slim margin.
Evers took over as Governor in 2018, defeating Walker who was seeking a third and final term in Madison.
