MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) The State Supreme Court heard oral arguments on Tuesday in the ongoing fight over whether or not the Wisconsin Elections Commission should purge about 130,000 voters with outdated records from the state voter rolls.
Justice Brian Hagedorn, who sided with liberal justices in delaying the hearing, wanted to know exactly if the Commission is even allowed to purge voter rolls. “One of the questions that perplexed me in this case, reading through it is, what Authority the commission thought it had to do what it did in 2017, and what authority it had to recommend to its commissioners, even in 2019, that we’ll just remove these in 12 to 24 months. What is it relying on for that?”
It is thought that Hagedorn, a conservative who sometimes sides with the liberal justices on the state’s highest court, is the swing vote in the case.
Democrats argue that the lawsuit is meant to lower turnout. Republicans counter it’s about reducing voter fraud.
It is unlikely that a decision will be reached before Election Day.
