MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — It’s not just the rate of infection that’s going up in the state of Wisconsin.
More concerning, doctors say, is the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19.
Hospitalizations in the Fox Valley are up 237% since Sept. 1, according to DHS data. On Sept. 23, there were 81 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the region. That number was 24 on Sept. 1.
“The numbers we have seen in recent days in hospitalizations are concerning. It emphasizes why it’s important for us to act now. It’s important for all of us to make choices now,” DHS Secretary Designee Andrea Palm said.
The state is seeing a spike in cases for 18 to 24-year-olds. Since last month, weekly cases in this age group have increased 300%, according to DHS data. The week of Sept. 13, there were 3,174 confirmed cases in that age range. That number was 792 four weeks prior.
“We have a case rate of five times higher than any other group. This has become especially concerning on our campus communities,” Gov. Tony Evers said in a press briefing Thursday.
Evers announced private colleges and universities will receive $8 million to ramp up testing efforts.
The overall message is the same: Mask up, socially distance, and stay home when you can.
