The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources released new numbers on the wolf population in the state. According to the DNR, 1,024 to 1,057 wolves lived in Wisconsin in 2019. They come up with these numbers by tracking the wolves, keeping an eye on snow tracks, dead wolves, and looking into wolf attacks. The DNR also gets some data from the public.
The report showed that there was an increase in population compared to the year before. In 2018 the wolf numbers were at 914 to 978 and 243 to 256 wolf packs. Either way, this is a significant difference from the ’80s. Wisconsin used to have about 5,000 wolves and then in the 1970s they decided to hunt the wolves. By 1980 it was estimated that the wolf population dropped to only 25.
