MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – ‘Tis the season for pumpkins, apple picking, and corn mazes. Fall has arrived in Wisconsin.
“Wisconsin is an outdoor, adventurous playground,” said Travel Wisconsin Secretary-designee Sarah Meaney.
The state’s tourism department is working on ways to get people outside to enjoy the season, before winter weather arrives. Part of those efforts – the Fall Color Report.
“It features color information for all 72 counties. What it is, really, is a prediction of what percentage of color each of these areas is anticipating and experiencing at that time…It’s an up-to-date guide and it’s maintained by over 100 different people we call color reporters across the state,” Meaney told WTAQ News. “The north, northeast, northwest are already starting to see a higher percentage of colors popping up in the trees…As you move further south, sort of the central Wisconsin, southeast and southwest Wisconsin, you just have slightly different temperature variations and fluctuations.”
Meaney suggested taking drives to check out the natural color shifts, or getting out to hike or bike along one of the state’s trails. She also pointed out the wide array of places like pumpkin patches, apple orchards, and other similar activities – which are often popular stops this time of year.
Even with the oddity of the pandemic throwing a curveball at plans this year, Meaney expects to see a lot of people – especially from within the state – traveling around Wisconsin.
“You can count on it being one of the most popular times of year to see the beauty of Wisconsin. It looks very different than it does in the summer and winter, so it gives us all a reason check the same spots out or new spots out each season,” Meaney said. “We see fall being the second most popular in terms of traditional number of visitors to the state…We see nearly a quarter of our visitors for any given year during the fall season.”
