MADISON, WI (Wisconsin Radio Network-WSAU) – Legislative Republicans have appealed a federal court ruling that extends the window for the state to accept absentee ballots. The appeal comes just a few days after federal judge William Conley ruled that clerks will be allowed to accept ballots that have been postmarked by Election Day, even if they come in later. Conley issued a stay after announcing his ruling, anticipating further court challenges.
The same ruling also extended the window for requesting an absentee ballot.
Experts expect the ruling to head all the way up to the U.S. Supreme Court. The nation’s highest court intervened in Wisconsin’s spring election, limiting the acceptance of absentee ballots that arrived at clerks’ offices after the polls closed.
